My First Toastmasters Meeting
I went to my first toastmasters meeting. If you don’t know what toastmasters are, they are a group that helps people practice public speaking. If you need help in that area, this group gives you a great chance to practice and get feedback.
I’m used to speaking in front of people, so it wasn’t that bad for me. It was pretty fun actually. At the group I went to, all new guests have to do an improv speech. So, of course, I had to do one. I picked a paper out of a hat. The paper had a famous quote or saying. Then I had to make a speech about that.
At the end of everyone’s speeches, they had to vote on who gave the best speech. And I won! I think it was because I made it funny, and they already had low expectation of me since I was new. After the speeches, we split up into teams of 3 and played an improv game where we had to create a story from 3 random phrases.
Overall it was a fun experience. It looked like everyone had to speak in front of the group at least once in the meeting. That’s good since everyone gets a chance to speak.
There were people who were very good speakers. Also, there were people who weren’t very good speakers. But it’s a very positive environment. Since everyone is there to learn, no one should feel too shy or embarrassed to speak.
If your job requires you to give a lot of presentations, you should join toastmasters. Even if you don’t have to do any public speaking, I would recommend everyone to join. It’s a nice skill to have. There’s nothing like practice and feedback to make you better. Plus, it’s a great place to network since most people are working professionals there.
