Why are Manhole Covers Round?
From every interview I went, this was everyone’s favorite logic question. Interviewers shouldn’t ask logic questions in general because there’s usually one answer to a logic question. Also most people can read a book or go to a web site to find the correct answer.
If you don’t know the “correct” answer to why manhole covers are round is because the cover won’t fall into the hole when it is tilted.
But since I hear that question so many times, I decided to come up with my own “correct” answers:
- They’re not always round. In parts of Asia, they’re square/rectangular.
- Because they’re easier to move (by rolling them around).
- You don’t have adjust it to fit the hole. It just fits.
- Because round holes are perfect for people to fit through.
- It’s easy to cut (I heard this from my friend).
- It’s more aesthetically pleasing compared to other shapes.
So try these answers next time if you heard this question.
